Apple spent years watching Samsung, Google, Honor and others experiment with foldable phones.
Now it has finally entered the category.
The iPhone Duo is official.
It is Apple’s first foldable iPhone, it starts at €2,339 in France, and pre-orders open on October 16 before availability begins on October 23.
That alone will create an enormous amount of noise. So forget the launch-video language for a minute. Here is what actually matters.
It is an iPhone that becomes a 7.6-inch device
Closed, the iPhone Duo has a 5.4-inch outer display.
Open it and you get a 7.6-inch inner display, the largest screen Apple has ever shipped on an iPhone.
Apple says the internal panel is 50 percent larger than the display on the iPhone 18 Pro Max.
The interesting part is not just the size.
Both displays use the same aspect ratio, which allows apps and content to move between the outer and inner screens without dramatically changing shape.
That sounds small.
It is one of the details that could determine whether the Duo feels like a normal iPhone that unfolds or a separate category of device.
Apple is attacking the crease problem
The inner display uses a nano-texture finish designed to reduce glare and make the fold less visible.
Foldable phones have improved dramatically, but the crease remains one of the most obvious reminders that you are using a flexible display.
Apple clearly knows this.
The company is also hiding the inner FaceTime camera beneath the display when it is not being used, keeping the large panel visually clean. We will need real-world testing before judging either decision.
Launch photography is a terrible place to measure a foldable screen.
The hinge may be the most important component
Every foldable lives or dies by its hinge. Apple says the Duo uses a precision hinge designed for smooth movement and durability. Again, the claim is not interesting by itself.
What matters is how it behaves after thousands of folds, how much dust it tolerates, whether it stays stable at intermediate angles and how expensive it is to repair.
For a €2,339 phone, those questions are not details.
They are the product.
A20 Pro, dual batteries and serious thermal engineering
Inside, Apple is using the new A20 Pro.
The Duo also gets a custom vapor chamber and a dual-battery architecture. That combination tells us something about the engineering challenge Apple is trying to solve.
Foldables distribute components across two thin halves. Heat, battery capacity and structural rigidity all become harder. Apple is clearly trying to avoid making its first foldable feel like a compromised iPhone.
Whether it succeeds will only become clear after sustained performance and battery testing.
The price changes the audience
In France, the iPhone Duo starts at €2,339.
Storage options go from 256GB to 2TB. That makes it significantly more expensive than a conventional premium smartphone. So this is not the new default iPhone.
At least not yet.
The first Duo is better understood as a premium experiment at scale: a product for early adopters, professionals and buyers who want the largest iPhone experience available.
If demand is strong, the important story will come later.
Apple could bring the format downward into the mainstream range.
Apple Pencil support is coming later
Apple says the iPhone Duo will support the USB-C Apple Pencil later this year. That moves the device slightly closer to the territory traditionally occupied by small tablets.
The larger inner display could make note-taking, document review and visual work much more practical than on a conventional phone. It also suggests Apple sees the Duo as more than a media-consumption device.
iOS had to change too
The Duo ships with iOS 27.1.
Apple says the interface has been adapted for the foldable format, particularly multitasking and transitions between the two displays. This may ultimately matter more than the hinge. Android foldables have had years to experiment with multi-window interfaces.
Apple arrives late, but it arrives with one advantage: developers already target a relatively small and predictable device ecosystem. If Apple can make foldable layouts feel normal rather than optional, the effect on app design could spread quickly.
October 16 is the real starting line
Pre-orders begin October 16 at 14:00 in France. Availability begins October 23. Until reviews arrive, the biggest unknowns remain:
real battery life,
durability,
crease visibility,
camera trade-offs,
app adaptation,
repair costs,
and whether the larger screen actually changes everyday behavior.
